Where to Buy Flour Online from Smaller Mills

During the pandemic lockdown, flour became scarce across the country. The social distancing strictures put in place to slow the spread of coronavirus meant that more people were cooking at home than usual, and baking their own bread, too. In May of , King Arthur Flour sent out almost 6.6 million bags, double what they typically sell in their usual high season in the fall. At my own local grocery store, the baking aisle had been picked clean, save for a few sad-looking bags of white chocolate chips. But that didn't mean there wasn't any flour in the country &#; there was plenty! You just had to know where to look.

I took this mess as an opportunity to do something I'd been meaning to do for a while, which was to put in a big order at some of the small-scale mills making delicious and interesting flours from fresh grains. As our resident baking guru Paige Grandjean has written before, baking with freshly milled flours requires some subtle adjustments, particularly if you're making bread, but the flavor payoff is well worth it. Like wine, single-origin flour has a terroir, and no two batches are exactly the same.

Here are some excellent small mills where you can nab great flour and other materials for all your baking projects.

Anson Mills

This South Carolina company specializes in heritage grains. Aside from several kinds of stone-milled flours, they also offer fantastic grits, the best cornmeal I've ever had in my life, incredible polenta, and heirloom Carolina Gold rice revived from near-extinction.

Old Mill of Guilford

A favorite of Food & Wine Senior Editor Kat Kinsman, this mill also has a selection of cornmeal, polenta, and hush puppy mix, as well as pastry flour, bread flour, and plain old all-purpose white flour.

Grist & Toll

Pasadena, California's Grist & Toll sells not just freshly milled flours, but also bread-making kits, accessories, and artfully curated gift boxes.

Natalia Wrobe

Castle Valley Mill

This Bucks County, Pennsylvania, mill has an array of flours available in various amounts, including bolted rye flour, cornmeal, and germ-in wheat pasta.

Wade&#;s Mill

Family-owned Wade's Mill has been in business since and offers all kinds of flour, including white all-purpose and bread flour, as well as baking mixes, corn, and grits.

Janie&#;s Mill

From a fifth-generation miller team in Illinois, Janie's Mill has every variety of flour in stock, including flours made from ancient grains like einkorn.

John Merkle

Barton Springs Mill

This Texas mill is a favorite of our resident baking expert Paige Grandjean, and has flours milled from a number of different grains. They also sort their flours by what you might want to make with them, like biscuits or baguettes, which is a helpful way of looking at artisan grain flour if it's unfamiliar terrain.

Five Things to Avoid When Buying The Best Air Purifier

Where to Buy Flour Online - Stores in Stock

If you&#;re a human with an Instagram account, chances are you know someone who has made (or, at least, has attempted to make) sourdough bread. Should those photos of golden boules &#; or cookies or cakes or pies or galettes &#; inspire you to bake more while stuck at home, you might run into a common problem no matter your skill set: finding flour to bake with. Like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and baby wipes, the once-ubiquitous pantry staple has become increasingly hard to come by, both in stores and online (companies like King Arthur Flour are openly advertising their difficulties keeping it in stock).

But if you&#;re patient and flexible &#; two attributes that will also get you far in baking &#; and have the space to accommodate more flour than you might need right away, you can still find it online. Below, we&#;ve rounded up some places where you can still buy flour online &#; just note that some of the available bags are huge (50 pounds, to be precise). But if you don&#;t have room to keep one, you could consider splitting the purchase with a friend or neighbor. We&#;ve noted shipping fees throughout where we were able to find them, but know that anything is subject to change given rising demand.

If you don&#;t want to buy a ton of flour, Kalustyan&#;s, a specialty Indian grocery store in Manhattan, has options at different quantities, including smaller one-pound bags of bleached and unbleached all-purpose flour. While it does have variety, it might not be the fastest service: The website notes that, due to increased demand, the store is experiencing &#;huge delays&#; processing shipments. Still, Kalustyan&#;s is continuing to take orders that are shipped via USPS. Shipping fees start at $15.

Ultragrain White Whole Wheat Flour, One Pound

Nuts.com also carries a range of flours, including King Arthur&#;s organic all-purpose white flour &#; which we have seen go in and out of stock multiple times over the course of one day &#; and this white whole-wheat flour from Ultragrain, which seems to be in more steady supply. According to its product description, the Ultragrain flour &#;has the clean taste and smooth texture of white flour while providing the nutritional benefits of whole grains,&#; which, to us, kind of sounds like the best of both worlds? It&#;s available in one-pound, five-pound, and 25-pound bags, and shipping starts at $7.

One way to minimize the space a gargantuan bag of flour takes up is to buy that same amount broken up into smaller bags &#; like this case of 18 two-pound bags of all-purpose Gold Medal flour from Round Eye Supply. (The smaller packaging would allow you to easily share your flour bounty, should you be so inclined.) Should you prefer a gargantuan bag, Round Eye has those, too, like a 50-pounder from Pillsbury. Round Eye sends everything via FedEx and charges a shipping fee for every order that starts at $27.

And a handful of local retailers selling flour

In addition to the above stores shipping flour nationally, we dug up a few more options for city dwellers looking to buy it. Baldor, a restaurant supplier that now makes home deliveries, sells a bunch of different flours, including bulk bags. You can also find flour at specialty grocery stores through Mercato, which offers delivery (and sometimes contactless pickup) for a fee. Williamsburg pizzeria Leo is selling flour through Caviar, and Prospect&#;Lefferts Gardens restaurants Mo&#;s and Glady&#;s are selling it (and other staples) through their shared grocery store.
