Choosing the Best Heat Pump Hybrid Water Heater

Replacing your water heater can be a daunting task with numerous options available, including electric, tankless, and hybrid models. Making the right choice can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. In fact, a switch to a hybrid water heater could save you up to $4,800 over the next decade.

We dedicated hundreds of hours to find the best heat pump water heater on the market. Read on to discover our top picks.

Our Favorite: Rheem Performance Platinum

After an exhaustive review, we found the Rheem Performance Platinum to be the best heat pump hybrid hot water heater available.

Affordable Upfront Cost

Compared to its competitors, the Rheem Performance Platinum is the most affordable, with a 40-gallon model priced at $1,672 and a 50-gallon model at $1,699. This makes it significantly cheaper than both the AO Smith Signature Premier and Bradford White AeroTherm.

Exceptional Energy Efficiency

The Rheem Performance Platinum also boasts superior energy efficiency, with an energy factor of 3.75, compared to AO Smith's 3.45 and Bradford White's 3.39. Although the annual savings might be modest—around $10-15 per year—the lower initial cost makes it the best value.

Minimal Noise Output

Additionally, this model is known for its quiet operation, running at 49 dB, which is quieter than both the AO Smith (51 dB) and Bradford White (55 dB) models.

Runner-Up: AO Smith Signature Premier

Our second choice is the AO Smith Signature Premier.

Affordable Yet Pricier

Initially, AO Smith’s models were as affordable as Rheem’s, but prices have since increased. The 50-gallon AO Smith model now starts at $1,799, making it more expensive than Rheem but still cheaper than the Bradford White by $256.

Solid Energy Efficiency

The AO Smith hybrid water heater offers decent energy efficiency with an energy factor of 3.45, still trailing Rheem.

Although the performance is close, it may not be worth switching if your plumber prefers AO Smith. The minor energy efficiency difference translates to about $10-20 annually.

Moderate Noise Output

The AO Smith comes second in noise level at 51 dB. Although quieter than the Bradford White model, it’s slightly louder than the Rheem.

Overpriced: Bradford White AeroTherm

In last place is the Bradford White AeroTherm, and there are numerous reasons for this.

Higher Cost

Priced at $2,055 for a 50-gallon model, the Bradford White AeroTherm is significantly more expensive than both the Rheem and AO Smith options.

Limited Warranty

Surprisingly, despite its higher price, it comes with a shorter warranty—six years compared to the 10-year warranties offered by Rheem and AO Smith. Adding a 10-year warranty costs an extra $299.

Availability Issues

Bradford White heaters are also harder to find, as they are typically sold through supply houses and plumbers rather than major retail chains.

Other Reviewed Heat Pump Water Heaters

We also reviewed the following models:

  • Price: $1,916 (50-gallon tank)
  • Energy factor: 3.75
  • Annual cost: $105
  • Warranty length: 10 years

The ProTerra is Rheem’s premium model, but it offers similar specs to the Performance Platinum version, making the latter a better buy.

  • Price: $2,499
  • Energy factor: 3.05
  • Annual cost: $125
  • Warranty length: 10 years

Stiebel Eltron is a high-end German brand, yet its model falls short with an energy factor of 3.05 and a higher price tag.

Discontinued Models

We attempted to review the GE GeoSpring, Ruud, and State heat pump models, but these have been discontinued or acquired by AO Smith, Rheem, and Bradford White.
