If you are in the construction or transport industry, you will be familiar with the semi tipper trailer, which is mainly used for transporting sand, gravel, rock, and other construction materials. This is a highly efficient way which greatly increases the efficiency of transport. In the current guide, we will talk in detail about the various aspects of the semi tipper trailer.
If you want to learn more, please visit our website Tipper Truck Trailers.
Semi tipper trailers have a hydraulic system that is powered by the tractor or a separate engine to lift the trailer bed and unload the load. We usually use them in the construction and transport industry. They are used to transport heavy loads of loose materials, such as sand, gravel, construction debris, etc. Semi tipper trailers are also known as dump semi trailers, which do not have any driving power of their own and need to be connected to a tractor in order to move.
The key point of tipper semi trailer is the hydraulic cylinder. When unloading the bulky goods, the lifting arm goes up and tilts the hopper by 45 degrees to make the goods slide down. Usually, the tipper trailer can carry 30-70 tons and these can be emptied within half an hour.
2.1 Rear Tipper
As you see, the rear tipper truck, or rear tipper semi trailer, unloads the goods through the rear door of the trailer. This unloading way is with narrow outlet but it can provide protection. Usually, rear tipper tractor trailers are used for transporting various construction materials such as rocks, sand, stones, or even coal.
When working, the hydraulic cylinder gives strength to lift the front part of the tipper, and the cargo will slide down spontaneously by gravity. According to the info we mentioned above, you don’t need to worry about scratching as the tipper is made of high-tensile Hardox steel. This unloading way is easier and can greatly save your laboring cost ( you don’t need to hire people for unloading).
It is worth noting that the rear tipper is a perfect semi trailer to carry goods with a large rest angle. The rear tipper is suitable for cargo with a large rest angle, so the maximum length is 12m.
2.2 Side Tipper
The side tipper is also common in the market. Similar to the rear tipper, it can also carry construction materials, but the side tipper allows you to unload the cargo by the side door.
A hydraulic cylinder is installed on the other side to make the tipper unload by the side door. The reason why use this design is sometimes the construction materials might be too big to pass through the back door, the offloading area might be small, and the side tipper has a smaller rest angle. Side tipper trailer can help us load bigger and more goods. This is the unparalleled feature of this model.
Also, the steel plate is made of Hardox high-strength type, which prevents damages that may happen during the unloading process.
side tipper trailerThe container tipper trailer is equipped with a hydraulic system that lifts and tilts the container for unloading cargo. The container tipper trailer is available in 20ft and 40ft to accommodate different container sizes and types.
The container flatbed trailer is also equipped with a hydraulic system that lifts and tilts the container for unloading cargo. With the difference container tipper trailer, the container flatbed trailer has a flatbed.
3. Types of Tilting Systems
3.1 Direct-Push Type
This is the most common way to unload the cargo. The mechanism is simple. Just push up the trailer and wait for the cargo to slide off. The bed plate on the trailer is equipped with a towing van, when finishing the unloading, it just uses the towing van to withdraw the tipper quickly and easily.
There is also a towing bar hinged to the sliding mechanism connected under the trailer’s bed. The bar is also linked by a connecting rod and the wheel, which makes it stabler.
When the sliding hinge slides to the back, shape changes happen to the rod-frame-bed arrangement while the trailer continues to tip.
Due to the reasonable design, you can lock the trailer in a designated position and the tipper can still be tilted back for the bed plate, then be at a higher horizontal level than in the running state.
The direct-push design can be fixed at the front, the rear, or the middle section, and the front push can be simple in structure and can give the operation a longer stroke.
3.2 Link Rods Type
4. Classification of Van Body Type
4.1 The Box Type
The box tipper semi trailer has a rectangular hopper and is simple in structure to bear hard and rough materials for your use. But the tow bar has been strengthened to support towing forces while working.
Also, to counteract the thrust forces, Panda designs the tow bar with better quality to ensure stable working performance during tipping. It can greatly improve driving safety.
The box type is the most ordinary model all over the world for its sturdy quality and high efficiency. Speaking of the sturdy, the front end of the tow bar is designed with a fastening with a coupling part, and there are 2 fixing points at least on the bar’s surface to help fix the bed plate by locking the trailer on the road or in other terrible road conditions.
4.2 The U Type
The U-type tipper trailer is quite a pop star in Panda Mech’s catalog. Its’ feature is the shape of the tanker. As you can see in the picture below, this type of trailer has a bending on the corners, and this is to facilitate the unloading operation by improving the unloading speed. Also, it can unload bulky goods with no residue stuck in the corners. At present, it is the most efficient model in tipper semi trailer.
To enhance the wearing-resistant ability, the tanker plate is made of highly strengthened one-piece steel. This can prevent rupture or torsion in the working process and provide a longer service life.
The U-type tipper semi trailer is usually with lightweight but can transport large loads stably and quickly. The center of gravity of this semi is lower, which can guarantee safety in the driving process.
Operating semi tipper trailer is a very simple thing, drive semi tipper trailer to a designated location, then use a bulldozer or other machinery to load the goods into semi tipper trailer, load it and transport it to the destination. Unloading then begins, through the control system, lifting the cylinder to unload the cargo. (More about how to operate semi tipper trailer)
Semi tipper trailers have many different capacities and dimensions. Panda Mech max semi tipper trailer capacity is 150 tons. Common semi tipper trailer capacities are 30 tons, 50 tons, and 80 tons.
5. Why Choose Panda Mech Tipper semi Trailers?
When buying a tipper truck trailer, there are four points your need to consider carefully: the specifications, the spare parts and materials’ quality, the safety, and the design.
The Panda Mech dump semi trailer is the one that can meet these requirements and help to complete your work efficiently.
As we all know, a dump truck trailer is usually used for transporting aggregates, sand, and asphalt… These rough and abrasive materials need a highly strengthened steel plate to prevent crush and torsion. For this we use Hardox steel with 500 HBW, such a design can also guarantee operation safety.
The flat floor under the round tanker helps lower the center of gravity, and this can also greatly increase the wearing-resistant ability as well as the driving safety.
Panda’s dump semi trailer loading capacity is usually from 30 to 80 tons. The whole structure has been designed to bear heavy loads and keep it stable while driving on terrible roads.
6. Tipper semi Trailer Options to Consider in Different Applications
Now you have all the tips that need to be considered while purchasing, it is easier for you to choose the most suitable type to finish your transportation duty. Now you can choose rear tipper, side tipper, bottom tipper to transport efficiently according to your specific needs.
In Panda Mech’s tipper catalog, you can find loading capacity from lightweight 30 tons to heavy-duty 80 tons. Also, you can customize your tipper in dimensions or spare parts, and choose different tipping materials like carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
But please note that every model has its application range, and we will provide full services for you to help choose the most suitable configuration to ensure compatibility.
4 axle tipper semi trailerThe Loading Capacity
If you are to load bigger or more loads, choosing the rear tipper is the best choice. It can provide a fast unloading speed with convenience to free manual operation.
It is also suitable for two materials that are hard to handle, such as demotion debris. Due to the tough platform, structure, and tipper hopper, it can fight against harsh abrasion and crush.
The Appropriate Model
Before placing the order, there are two points that you need to know as thoroughly as possible. One is the dimension of your unloading space. This point determines the model you will choose. As we mentioned above, the side tipper trailer is good at offloading at smaller places while the rear tipper is more suitable at wider places. So be clear about the unloading space dimension before choosing the model. Also, if you are not sure which one is appropriate, welcome to contact us.
Another point is the size of your cargo. Though they are all debris, some are smaller. Under such conditions, rear tipper with U-shape is better for you. It can provide fast unloading thoroughly. But if the debris is larger and heavier, then choosing a side tipper can never be wrong.
The Stable Design
The hydraulic rams offer great power when dumping. This requires a higher-quality cylinder. Make sure the cylinder is from world-famous brands, such as HYVA used by Panda. This will give you a firm backup when dealing with a heavy-duty job.
The reason why we should choose such a cylinder is that it is stabler in holding up the tipper. As a result, it can guarantee a stable offloading process as well as the operators’ safety.
The rational trailer structure design is another thing you need to check carefully. These include the design and the welding seams. If possible, go to factory to check whether the trailer structure is compact enough and whether the welding seams are closely connected with no obvious juncture. As it were, these concerns the safety and life while you are on the road.
If It Is Made of High-tensile Material
In market, there is various steel and the quality is mixed. In that case, it is important to select the high-quality one.
The best steel is Hardox steel. Panda has used Hardox steel for tipper trailer manufacturing for over 10 years. The biggest advantage of this material is the high-strength texture. It can serve for over 7 years. With the polyurethane painting on, the whole tipper semi trailer will be free of rupture and torsion, neither corrosion nor rust.

The spare parts, the materials, and the design of Panda’s tipper semi trailer are all sophisticated and superior, and welcome to contact us to further discuss the specification and price.
If the semi tipper trailer cannot be rise, we should check the following parts:
Check the force harvester: First, check whether the drive shaft connected to the oil pump rotates. If not, it indicates that there is a problem with this part of the force harvester.
Check the pump: Check whether the pump steering is correct and whether the pump is damaged.
Check the distribution valve: Check whether the gas pipe on the distribution valve is damaged or not.
Check to see if the solenoid valve that controls the lift is connected upside down.
Elimination method:
Semi tipper trailer cannot be used to transport liquids. It is generally used to transport sand, stones, and other items. If you need to transport the liquids, it is recommended that you use the fuel tanker trailer.
Different semi tipper trailer manufacturers can provide different load capacities of the semi tipper trailer, Panda Mech can provide a maximum load of the semi tipper trailer is 150 tons. Payload is determined by design, dimension, etc.
Yes, the semi tipper trailer is a good choice for long-distance transportation.
Every time we use semi tipper trailer, we should check the tires, braking system, oil cylinder, etc. In order to improve the service life of the semi tipper trailer, we have cleaned or maintained the trailer every time after use. It is also a good choice to maintain the trailer once every 15-30 days.
Due to different work demands and the need to enhance efficiency in your operations, the choice of work equipment becomes very useful.
You definitely want to invest the least you can while at the same time get the best quality to serve you throughout the life-cycles of your chosen equipment.

One. What is a Tipper Trailer?
A tipper trailer is a big trailer that usually lifts when dumping its hall in a chosen location. It is similar to the dump truck trailer and is used synonymously to mean the same thing.
However, there are small tweaks here and there that make each one of them unique. There are different tipping options but the main ones are the rear and the side tippers.
Tipper trailers will help you to carry and offload bulk goods in a very easy and efficient manner. At the end, your operations will be highly affordable.
They are become such a wonderful solution especially in handling big jobs. Safety in operations is well taken care of through a well-designed mechanism of offloading your goods.
With tipper trailers, they are applicable in the construction, agriculture and recycling industries among many other areas. They come in different shapes and types. Therefore, you will have variety based on your specific needs and requirements.
1.1 Important Parts of a Tipper Trailer
The body of a tipper trailer is a conventional framework that has a bed with detachable side walls. Conventional designs are usually linked through a rear hinge to frame on which wheels are supported and mounted.
The set-up is then fixed to a guide for the sliding hinge. The front of the bed plate is fitted with features for latching to the tow bar. The bed is again fitted with either a single leg or multiple retractable legs that are used as a table.
The connecting rod is usually hinged at its ends to oscillate at respective axes that are parallel to the trailer axes.
Regardless of the number used, the connecting rods serve to link up the sliding hinge to the parts of the wheel-carrying frame structure. Check figure 2 and figure 3 for more details.
The hinging of the frame is normally done at the rear section and at the same time has the trailer wheels mounted thereon. Shock absorber means could be installed in between the hinged frame and the wheels.
One side of the connecting rod is hinged at the frame. There are blocks that are usually attached to the rear part of the frame and are supposed to touch the ground.
In many traditional designs, the frame is also used to support brake lights, mudguards, indicator lights as well as housings used for receiving a jack as would be needed for wheel changing.
Two: Types of Tipper Trailers
There are two types of tipper trailers namely:
Rear Tipper
Side Tipper
2.1 Rear Tipper
A rear tipping trailer also known as a rear tipper trailer works by offloading cargo towards the back area. They are commonly used to carry construction material such as sand and stones as well as other materials such as coal.
Ideally, you can use it for loading industrial raw materials or any other solid material used in construction. The rear tipper design is meant to facilitate the offloading process.
Once the back of your trailer is locked, you can load your cargo in that position. On arriving at your destination, the front side of the tipper trailer gets raised causing your cargo to drop off from the back.
The bucket of your tipper trailer has been built with a thicker steel plate to sustain the weight of the cargo that is usually of hard materials. This way, the tough steel plate prevents the cargo from damaging your trailer.
The Rear tipper is suitable for cargo with a large rest angle. It is important to note that the Rear tipper cannot be more than 12m long. Any truck longer than that may be dangerous.
2.2 Side Tipper
A side tipper is an alternative to the rear tipper. This type of dump truck trailer allows you to offload your goods from the side. Still, you can use it for transporting solid building materials such as sand and stones among others.
The side tipper makes use of hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors and a dump-bucket to one side. The remaining side gives you the option of opening and locking it during your job operations.
The design is meant to allow side dumping and there is a reason for that. You may be forced to do side dumping in areas where there isn’t sufficient space.
In such a situation, lateral offloading can be done using this side tipper. It helps in saving space. Thick steel plates are also put in place to prevent damages that may occur on the trailer with weak plates.
Unlike with the rear tipper, the side tipper is suitable for cargo with a small rest angle. However, the side tipper can load more than the rear tipper.
Figure 2 Side and Rear Tipper Trailers Respectively
Three: Types of Tilting Systems
There are two type of tilting systems:
The Direct-push type and
The Link rods type
3.1 Direct-Push Type
These are the most common types you will find out there in the market. It is a simple mechanism that directly pushes the trailer upwards in a clockwise direction to offload the cargo.
The bed plate of the trailer is tipped through the towing van moving it backwards.
The tow bar is normally hinged to sliding mechanism that is disposed under the bed plate and linked through a single connecting rod leading to the wheel that supports the frame usually hinged to the rear section of the bed plate.
When the sliding hinge is let to slide towards the back, the rod-frame-bed arrangement undergoes shape changes as the trailer continues to tip.
You can lock the trailer in a desired position and still be tilted back around the wheels for the bed plate to occupy a higher horizontal level than that in the running position.
A direct push mechanism can be located at the front, the rear or at the middle section.
The front push is normally simple in structure and can provide you with a long stroke. The middle push is show in figure 5 below.
Get Detailed Drawing!
3.2 Link Rods Type
This is a somewhat indirect and sophisticated mechanism designed to achieve a more efficient lifting than for the direct push. Still, the mechanism pushes the trailer upwards in a clockwise direction to offload the cargo.
The tow bar in this case is hinged to sliding mechanism that is disposed under the bed plate,
and linked through a number of connecting rods leading to the wheel that supports the frame usually hinged to the rear section of the bed plate, just like in most tippers.
There are several moving rods that link up to transfer motion to the bed plate of the trailer to tip it through the towing van hence moving it backwards. See figure 7 below.
As the trailer continues to tip, the connecting rods-the frame and-the bed arrangement undergoes adjustments creating a balance at each position.
These link rods enhance the lifting operation by reducing the amount of effort required. Ideally, this type of tipper trailer provides uniform strength on van body and ensures reduced thrust.
Most importantly, the general mechanism has increased hydraulic cylinder efficiency. The assembly for the link rods type can be done either facing the front or the back as shown in figure 7 and figure 8 below respectively.
Four: Classification on Van Body Type
Tipper trailers can also be classified based on the van body type. Therefore, you can make a choice of what you want based on this to go for the:
The Box types, and
The U-type tipper trailers
4.1 The Box Type
The box type is rectangular in shape and is designed with less sophisticated features for your use. The tow bar is sufficiently strong to withstand towing forces needed during towing.
Additionally, it also designed to be strong in order to counteract the thrust forces experienced during the tipping of the trailer. This is cheap and easy to produce.
It is the widely used option around the globe. The tow bar’s front end has a standard fastening with a coupling at the rear section. On the minimum, there are two fixing points that are available along the tow bar length.
They are used for fixing the bed plate of the trailer. One of the points is used for locking the trailer in while in running position and the other when in the table position.
4.2 The U Type
The U-type tipper trailer is designed and fabricated in the shape as shown in figure 10 below. This type of trailer provides you with the following benefits in your job operations.
First, it is built of a high strength and wear-resistant plate
U type is Streamline and therefore, the unloading speed is faster and more thorough compared to other options you will find in the industry market.
This is a piece of whole plate that does not have splicing. This is offers you with a good wear resistant product
Most importantly, this is a light weight trailer that offers you with a large load capacity
Stability is guaranteed with the trailer’s low center of gravity. Essentially, the center of gravity decreases by 120mm. As a result, it helps in making your operations safe

Five: Why Choose these Tipper Trailers?
Our tipper trailers are the type of trailers you would want for your job because they are made of a rounded steel body making them strong for rugged use.
They are designed to economically and specifically transport abrasive materials such as aggregates, asphalt and sand among other materials of this nature. Here are important facts to consider: –
The flat floor that comes with the rounded steel body provides a low center of gravity. This is important in providing great stability and safe operations.
Payload capacity. The design of the tipper trailer body is done in a way that reduces weight hence increasing the load capacity of your truck.
The body shape of the tipper trailer prevents your cargo from keeping to the surface. This enhances safety when loading your cargo.
The rounded steel bodies are optimized for high loading volumes that range between 24 -56m3. More than that, the body is designed to tackle different challenges as would be needed on a daily basis.
Six: Tipper Trailer Options to Consider in Different Applications
With all the information about tipper trailers, you can now comfortably choose the type suited for your application. It is important to know the trailer choice that will deliver most work in your application.
In your choice, you should match bottom dumps, side dumps, end dumps, pups and transfers to the type of work you are doing for maximum efficiency.
This includes durability, weight and payload capacity considerations of aluminum and steel choices. Tipper trailers are available in a number of basic configurations as listed here and it is important to consider that in your choice.
Even though axle spacing and regional weight regulations usually establish the best option for the application, it is important to be aware of the type of application best suited to execute together with the pros and cons
Handling Tough Stuff
End dumps are the most suitable when handling bigger loads. More than that, they offer you with faster offloading capabilities. They are also able to haul difficult cargo such as demotion debris.
These end dumps normally include a heavy-sided design that makes it possible for them to deal with these large debris materials. This is the kind of tipper trailer to choose when you come across such tough stuff to handle.
However, you will have to deal with issues of instability that may be noticeable when in dump position. This is more so in areas where the location of dumping is not even.
In that case, you will have to get a very good operator lest you get the trailer rolling over during operations.
Using Bottom Dumps
Bottom dumps include a clamshell dump gate at the trailer’s bottom. As the clamshell opens, the material can be laid precisely in a windrow right and left or be evenly spread across the back of the trailer as it opens next to the rear.
Bottom dumps can be used in three major applications: asphalt paving, stockpiling and for material transportation. Yes, contrary what is the common belief, this type of trailer is a very effective tool for stockpiling.
The advantage of using a bottom tipper is the ability to give you quick turnaround times. The wheels won’t stop turning as you drive through the dump zone and open up the gates fully.
Side Dumps for Stable Operations
The hydraulic rams of a side tipper allow you to tilt the body when dumping the material either to the left or to the right side of the trailer. This allows for a higher payload capacity and rapid offloading.
During the dumping cycle, the trailer is able to maintain stability. The tip-over accident rate of a side tipper is much lower when compared to an end dump and as a result, insurance companies usually charge lower premiums.
As a result, the side tipper is well suited for doing site preparation work. The way in which it is designed makes it possible for the operator to have many dumping options.
When to get Pup Trailers
A pup trailer is normally pulled by a standard tipper truck that has its own hydraulic ram. With this ram, it has a capability of self-offloading. This setup increases the payload carrying capacity without taking advantage of its maneuverability.
The most important thing is that, there is no need to unhook your trailer. Even though they are quite nimble, you need some space since you should jackknife them to offload the material.
With this trailer, dumping is also done quickly. As a driver, you don’t need to alight from the truck in order to dump. Large payloads can be hauled in a versatile way that gives you the option of spreading the material.
Transfer Trailer
The transfer trailer also known as the slam-bang as a result of the noise it makes when transferring load is able to carry double load. This trailer is usually pulled through a standard tipper trailer.
When you want to offload your cargo, you have to unhitch the trailer and then dump it. After that, you can back up to the trailer that rolls on rails on it to the standard tipper truck body through pneumatic, electric or hydraulic systems.
The beauty of this trailer is the fact that you can haul double full loads of cargo to your job-site. This is a very good option especially where you have to travel long distances to offload your cargo.
Payload-Weight Comparisons
You can get two options of bottom tipper trailers: the heavy duty mostly used for off-road applications and then ultra-light options for maximizing the legally acceptable road payloads.
With these two options, you can maximize them in each of the different applications. The heavy-duty tipper trailers have several steel reinforcements and are most applicable when moving weightier cargo.
However, you cannot hit a legal highway with such loads on them. The best way to use them is during off-road applications in a situation where the trailer gets twisted through rough roads.
On the other hand, the ultra-weight maximizes payloads when running on a legal highway without breaching any laws.
Choice based on Truck Body Material
The most common used material in the construction of tipper body construction. However, steel is of different qualities and composition. In that case, it is important to choose the most suited type of steel to a given application.
Consider the hardness nature of the material that makes it resistant to abrasion. If you want to carry gravel and sand with your tipper trailer, you may want to know the ability of the steel body to resist abrasion.
Another thing to consider is tensile strength which defines the ability to withstand load impact. This should particularly be considered in the building of the chassis.
Last but not least, look at the yield strength of the particular steel used. This quality is important in resisting dents on steel.
Choosing a Dump Truck over a Tipper Trailer
A dump truck is an alternative to a tipper trailer. Usually, there are quite a number of dump trucks that can meet regional axle spacing and weight regulations.
These trucks can be used in case where tipper trailers don’t fit in your kind of application. Each comes with merits and limitations based on the payload capacity and its maneuverability during the dumping process.
Standard Dump Trucks
these are short wheelbase trucks that maximize on maneuverability during operation. The main limitation is the narrow payload capacity as defined by the regional axle spacing and weight regulations.
However, they are available in a number of axle and wheel configurations with an option of dumping body designs that meet different applications.
It is important to establish the intended use of the truck fro gravel and sand to moving construction debris. This helps a lot in guiding the buyer to make a choice of the suitable steel design and construction.
Particularly, elliptical steel body designs become useful where the material naturally hangs up. In that case, the elliptical contoured floor helps in having an easier flow.
More than that, it deflects big rocks and prevents them from hitting flat on the floor. This helps a lot in reducing the denting that is usually connected to heavy impacts.
Conclusion
The need for safer and efficient load carrying trailers has prompted the use of this technology to build the tipper trailer. While some cargo would require manual loading and offloading, such products as building materials wouldn’t require specialized care during offloading. All you need to do is to dump your cargo on arriving at your destination. In that case, you won’t have to waste time removing your cargo bit by bit. A tipper trailer makes this possible through hydraulic systems installed on the bed of your trailer. Many designs of tipper trailers are now available to offer you an option that is close to your job needs. You can now choose between having a rear tipper and slider tipper looking at the benefits of each as outlined in this guide.
