How does an adsorption air dryer work?
Step 1: Adsorption process initiation
The adsorption air dryer works by removing moisture from compressed air through the process of adsorption. The dryer contains desiccant material, typically activated alumina or silica gel, which has a high affinity for water molecules.
Step 2: Air inlet
Compressed air enters the dryer through an inlet and flows through the desiccant material. As the air passes through the desiccant, water vapor in the air adheres to the surface of the desiccant particles.
Step 3: Moisture removal
The desiccant material adsorbs the water molecules, effectively removing moisture from the compressed air. This process continues until the desiccant becomes saturated with water.
Step 4: Regeneration of desiccant
Once the desiccant reaches its moisture capacity, the dryer switches to a regeneration phase. In this phase, a portion of the dry compressed air is diverted and passed through the saturated desiccant bed. The dried air heats up the desiccant, causing the water molecules to be released from the desiccant surface.
Step 5: Purge of moisture-laden air
The moisture-laden air, along with the released water vapor, is then vented out of the dryer through a purge valve. This ensures that the moisture is expelled from the system, and the desiccant bed is ready for the next adsorption cycle.
Step 6: Repeated cycle
The dryer cycles between the adsorption phase and the regeneration phase continuously to provide dry compressed air. This cycle ensures that the desiccant material remains effective in removing moisture from the compressed air.By following these steps, an adsorption air dryer is able to effectively remove moisture from compressed air, making it suitable for various industrial applications where dry air is required.
