Hi Michelle,
Just wanted to say thanks and share my experience with you.
Back at the start of February, I began working with a service company that contracts to a large iron ore mine in Pilbara. After several months on-site, I often reflect on how good the overall experience was at My Solution Training. The team was fantastic. Not only was I well-prepared to start as a trainee dump truck driver, but also equipped for life in the mining camp, facilitating a smooth transition into my new career.
This preparedness was largely due to the knowledgeable trainers who emphasized the importance of fitting into the FIFO lifestyle alongside mastering the role's duties.
Two others at my site also trained with MST and have transitioned smoothly into their roles as well. Shared training experiences have given us a good connection, even without prior experience in the industry.
Securing employment took time and many applications. Moments of doubt were inevitable, but the support and advice from My Solution Training proved invaluable. Following their guide ultimately led to my success.
By applying for a wide range of positions repeatedly, setting up profiles with every possible employer, and treating job hunting as a daily routine, I secured a phone interview with a large mining service contractor. The interview guide provided by My Solution Training was crucial, and I was well-prepared for the questions. Shortly after the interview, I received a job offer contingent on passing a medical examination.
Your early advice on applying directly to employers rather than through labor hire firms or consultants made perfect sense. Employers are unlikely to pay for an intermediary to find inexperienced hires.
Thank you again for all the guidance and support throughout the process.
HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS WE ASKED AND THE ANSWERS:
If you are looking for more details, kindly visit Mining dump truck.
1. What age are you?59
2. What made you decide to get into mining? My sister-in-law was doing an MST (My Solution Training) course. I had always been interested but didn’t know how to get into it. Seeing how it changed a friend's family life in terms of security and choices, along with the drought-affected economy in our region, made me think this could make a real difference.
3. Why did you decide to be a dump truck operator? The idea of driving a big truck was appealing, and there seemed to be plenty of job ads.
4. What were you doing for work before this?I worked in wholesale beer sales for a small rural craft brewery.
5. Why did you decide to do training before trying to get a job?It seemed like a no-brainer. Once I decided to make the change, I wanted to expedite the process. The training's cost is offset by the potential earnings in just a few weeks. It also gave me confidence, knowing I started ahead as a trainee.
6. Why did you choose My Solution for training?I couldn't find another course on the East Coast where I could actually drive the trucks. I had accommodation in Brisbane, and doing the water cart, dump truck, and standard 11 training together represented good value.
7. What did you think of your training?Excellent
8. What did you think of your trainers? They were very knowledgeable, good communicators, and willing to share their experiences.
9. You got a resume professionally done by Resume Righters, the company we suggest. Were you happy with it?Yes, I received positive feedback from prospective employers.
10. What steps did you take to get a job? Where did you look?I followed your plan and treated job hunting like a job. Most mornings started at around 5:00 AM, spending an hour or two applying for jobs. I looked everywhere your guide suggested and believed persistence would eventually lead to success.
11. How long did it take you to get a job?About three months
12. What happened when you first got to site, did you have to do inductions etc.?Yes, about four days' worth. It was tedious and boring, and it was the only stage I doubted my decision to enter the mining industry.
13. Did they provide a trainer for you the first time you got into one of their trucks?I sat in with several drivers for about three days, then drove with experienced drivers for about four days before being VOC’d in the Komatsu. Then I drove by myself.
14. Were you nervous? No, not really
15. What swings/hours are you doing?2 weeks on / 1 week off – 12.5-hour days/nights
16. Did they provide your PPE?Yes
17. Do you have to get yourself to the site?I fly myself to Perth from Melbourne, then take a charter flight to the Roy Hill mine.
18. What is your accommodation like?Basic but good
19. What is the food like? It's OK. It varies depending on which cooks are on duty, but overall, it's fine.
20. Do they have a gym?Yes, along with a pool, other organized sporting activities, and a bar.
21. Is there anything else you think it would be good to tell someone just starting in the industry that you would have liked to have known? My Solution Training prepared me really well. The induction process was tedious and had many gaps with nothing to do, which made the time drag and caused homesickness. Better mental preparation for this initial phase would have been beneficial.
