Understanding Different Jar Finishes

The two main types of closures in food packaging are:

Continuous-thread (CT)

This Mason-style closure involves a continuous thread around the jar’s opening, commonly known as "screw-on". The skirt length on CT lids can vary. Most Mason jars have a 70/450 finish but there's also a shorter 70/400 version. Examples of both finishes will be shown below.

Lug

This closure features multiple threads on the container and corresponding lugs or tabs on the lid. Referred to as "twist-off" closures, they offer a secure seal for various containers.

Measuring Jars and Lids

Typically, jar and lid measurements are given in millimeters (mm). Without a metric ruler, a standard ruler or tape measure can suffice by converting to metrics. Regardless of a jar's CT or lug finish, measuring follows the same method.

For lids, measure the diameter across the inside. With accurate measurements and the identification of the finish type (lug or CT), you can select the best lid from our selection.
